Retainer Instructions

  • Wear your retainer at all times, until your orthodontist instructs you otherwise.
  • Initially, you may experience some slight difficulty speaking for a short time until your tongue gets used to your new retainer.
  • Remove your retainer when you’re eating or drinking hot beverages and always put it in the case!
  • If you remove your retainer, always put it in the case! Pets love to chew on appliances.
  • Remove your retainer when you’re swimming.
  • Clean your retainer every morning and night with only a toothbrush and warm water. DO NOT use toothpaste. Toothpaste may scratch the retainer.
  • Do not try to adjust your retainer yourself.
  • Always bring your retainer to your appointments.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot air, hot car dashboards, the washing machine, pockets, and napkins.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call us immediately as your teeth can move quickly!
  • Retainer replacements are expensive, but with proper care, they will last for years!
